The ScIOS program is a 4-day, content-based, intensive orientation program for incoming First Time in College Biological Sciences majors as well as other freshmen whose majors require them to take Biology 1011. The goal of the ScIOS program is to increase the success rate of students in their first semester by exposing them to the demands of college-level coursework before the semester starts. Students attending the program will get a jump start on course content for the introductory course for their major. They will learn important study skills and strategies, and will gain an understanding how much they have to study and what is expected of them in order to succeed in college.

The program combines course content with strategies for mastering it. Over the course of four days, students will attend Biology lectures and will take exams. Lectures and exams will be based on actual course materials. Instructor feedback will be given after each exam. Graduate and advanced undergraduate students will mentor students and will facilitate small study group sessions.

Students will take two lectures a day, followed by exams on that material the following day. Two labs will be presented, with the additional goal of exciting students about their major. Learning strategies will be discussed in the context of their exam results. Group study sessions are interspersed through the program to help participants build social bonds that cement their group studying.
